On Tuesday, Tyson Foods (TSN.N) announced it would lay off 228 corporate employees in Illinois who refused to move to its Arkansas headquarters to decrease expenses.

According to the state, Tyson will lay off 177 downtown Chicago workers and 51 suburban Downers Grove workers on July 31.

Last October, Tyson announced a corporate office consolidation with 500 employees. As Tyson faces high cattle prices and declining meat demand from cash-strapped consumers, employees have rebelled and departed for other work.
Tyson said the 228 laid off are individuals who stayed until the Chicago and Downers Grove locations closed.

The company said corporate office consolidation affected those affected.

Tyson will lay off 490 of its 1,000 non-relocating corporate employees, including those at a Dakota Dunes, South Dakota location.

Tyson claims transferring staff to its Springdale, Arkansas, headquarters will improve teamwork and decision-making.

In April, the business closed two U.S. chicken operations with approximately 1,700 workers and announced it would cut 10% of corporate jobs and 15% of senior leadership positions.

According to regulatory filings, Tyson employed 124,000 U.S. employees on Oct. 1, including 118,000 in production plants.
