Ron DeSantis, the governor of Florida, is thought to be a leading candidate for the Republican presidential candidacy in 2024.
Former President Donald Trump denies spending time considering or brainstorming nicknames for DeSantis. Instead, using his social media channel Truth Social, Trump referred to the reports as “Fake News” and said they were “an irrelevant subject to me!!!”
According to unnamed sources who spoke to The New York Times, Trump had been looking for evidence against DeSantis and had given him mocking titles like “Meatball Ron” and “Shutdown Ron,” alluding to the governor’s decision to close down Florida at the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic.
In hypothetical Republican primary elections for the White House, DeSantis routinely ranks second among GOP voters in support, trailing only Trump.
However, DeSantis has not retaliated against Trump’s criticisms and has stated that his attention is on Florida and his campaign against President Joe Biden.
Before the 2022 election, Trump targeted DeSantis.
He recently posted an image from more than 20 years ago, in which he said the governor had consumed alcohol with kids while he was a high school teacher.
Despite Trump’s criticism, DeSantis won reelection in the state by almost 20 points.
